The GenAI Salary Landscape in India
Demand for GenAI talent has driven compensation to levels that rival — and in some cases exceed — senior software engineering roles that took years to reach. The talent shortage is real: the number of job postings for AI Engineer, LLM Engineer, and related roles has grown much faster than the supply of qualified candidates.
This guide uses aggregated data from job postings, recruiter surveys, and community reports to give you realistic benchmarks. Numbers are in Indian Rupees (LPA = Lakhs Per Annum) and represent total annual compensation (base + bonus), excluding ESOPs unless noted.
Salary by Role and Experience
LLM / AI Engineer
- 0–2 years (junior): ₹8–16 LPA. Typically at early-stage startups or outsourcing firms exploring GenAI. Some companies offer higher if you have strong portfolio projects.
- 2–5 years (mid-level): ₹18–35 LPA at product companies. Well-funded GenAI startups and MNC R&D centres can reach ₹40 LPA.
- 5+ years (senior): ₹40–70 LPA at leading product companies. Staff and principal levels at well-funded unicorns can reach ₹80–100 LPA with ESOPs.
ML / AI Researcher
- Research Scientist (industry): ₹25–55 LPA. Requires Masters or PhD with publications or strong research portfolio.
- Senior Research Scientist: ₹55–90 LPA at top labs (Google DeepMind India, Microsoft Research India, Sarvam AI, Krutrim).
MLOps / AI Platform Engineer
- Mid-level: ₹14–28 LPA. Demand is strong at companies that have moved past prototype stage.
- Senior: ₹28–50 LPA. AWS/GCP/Azure certifications plus experience with MLflow, Kubeflow, or SageMaker push compensation toward the top of this band.
Data Scientist (GenAI-focused)
- Mid-level: ₹12–25 LPA. The spread is wide — traditional DS roles pay lower; DS roles that include LLM work pay at the high end.
- Senior: ₹25–45 LPA. Roles involving LLM evaluation, fine-tuning research, or productising AI features reach the high end.
Prompt Engineer
- Standalone role: ₹8–20 LPA. This role is increasingly being folded into general AI Engineer responsibilities. Pure prompt engineering positions are less common in 2025 than in 2023.
Salary by City
Bangalore remains the highest-paying city for tech roles, followed by Hyderabad, Pune, and Chennai. Remote-first companies often pay Bangalore rates regardless of location.
- Bangalore: 100% (baseline). The densest concentration of AI-hiring companies.
- Hyderabad: 90–95% of Bangalore rates. Growing AI presence from Microsoft, Amazon, and Indian unicorns.
- Pune: 80–90% of Bangalore rates. Strong MNC presence, slightly lower cost of living.
- Chennai / NCR: 80–90% of Bangalore rates. Fewer GenAI-native companies but large MNC R&D centres.
- Remote (India-based): 85–100% of Bangalore rates for companies that are remote-first by policy.
Salary by Company Type
- GenAI-native startups (seed/Series A): Cash compensation at the mid-low end, but ESOP upside can be significant. Often the best place to build deep GenAI expertise quickly.
- Well-funded unicorns and Series B+: Highest cash compensation in the market. Performance bonuses are common. ₹30–70 LPA is achievable at senior levels.
- Large MNC R&D centres (Google, Microsoft, Amazon, Meta): Competitive cash plus RSUs and global benefits. Total comp for senior roles can exceed ₹1 Cr when stock is included.
- IT services companies (TCS, Infosys, Wipro AI divisions): Lower than product companies. ₹10–25 LPA mid-level is typical. Better for initial exposure than for career maximisation.
- Consulting (Accenture AI, Deloitte AI): Slightly above services, below product. Frequent client exposure across industries is a real advantage for generalists.
How to Negotiate Your Compensation
A few practical points that apply specifically to GenAI roles:
- If you have a deployed project with metrics (latency, cost per query, user adoption), use it as leverage. Concrete outcomes are more persuasive than years of experience.
- Always get competing offers if possible. Two competing offers from product companies will move a services company's number more than any negotiation tactic.
- For ESOPs, ask about the strike price, vesting cliff, and last round valuation. ESOPs at pre-Series A companies are lottery tickets; at Series B+, they are part of the real compensation picture.
- Variable pay at services companies is often capped and tied to utilisation metrics. Factor this into your true expected annual earnings, not just the headline CTC.
